6 Steps To Becoming a Successful Real Estate Agent

6 Steps To Becoming a Successful Real Estate Agent

By Janelle D. 2 min read |

After getting licensed as a real estate agent, the next goal is to achieve great success.  The timetable for success will vary with each agent, but having a lot of drive and focus will get you there faster.  Let's focus on 6 steps that can help you become the most successful agent in the real estate industry.

Whether you have been licensed for 1 day or 1 year, to succeed as a real estate agent you need to start with a plan, surround yourself with exceptional people, and continuously hone your craft.  The following 6 tips will help you succeed in real estate.

1. Business Plan

Create a business plan, before jumping into the real estate world, to not only keep you on track but help you achieve or surpass your business goals.  Whether you want to represent 2 home sellers per month or earn 6 figures your first year, it all starts with a written plan.  To ensure the greatest amount of success, hire a real estate coach to help build a business plan or share it with an office mate who can keep you accountable.

2. Mentorship

Shadow a real estate mentor to put your career on the fast track.  A mentor will share their experiences and lessons learned, allow you to shadow them as they work with clients, teach you how to effectively present a listing presentation, give you open houses to host, and so much more. As you train to become a successful real estate agent, remind yourself that you don't know everything. Take advantage of the insights you can gain from an experienced real estate agent to propel your success.

An option to finding a mentor is to work as an assistant to a high-level Realtor®. Learn as much as you can from this person and their team so you can apply it when you go out on your own.

3. Perpetual Learning

Beyond the licensing exam, you'll find there are a lot of opportunities to learn about real estate -- CE classes, designation courses, and certification classes.  Learning different aspects of real estate will give you a varied perspective and more success in servicing a variety of clientele.  Also, the value you get out of these courses will increase the return you will get out of your business.

4. Community Expert

As a new real estate agent, you should focus on becoming an online local community expert. Start by creating a killer website then create exceptional community pages (everything you'd want to know about an area/city) for the areas you do business in.  Take time to learn about SEO (or find an expert) and market your community pages for the greatest return. Sharing your community knowledge will help build your online presence and give you a reputation as a community expert.  Consider sharing your expertise in the following areas:

  • Demographics
  • Town history
  • Local attractions
  • Restaurants
  • Schools
  • Parks
  • Seasonal events
  • Description of the real estate market
5. Put People First

Real estate is a people-first industry.  To elicit the greatest amount of success as a real estate agent, concentrate on how you're treating your clients and fellow agents.  Your ability to listen intently and treat those around you with the utmost respect will prove to be the basis of a very successful career.  Answer the phone when it rings, respond to text messages quickly, communicate, communicate, communicate.

6. Leads

When it comes to success as a new real estate agent, you must factor in internet leads. Whether you're using your website to generate leads or purchasing human-verified leads from Reazo, they can catapult your business to the next level. How well you manage those leads determines your success.

  • Respond to them within 5 minutes
  • Be a good listener
  • Be a caring person
  • Nurture, nurture, nurture

Conclusion

As you apply these best practices as a new real estate agent, remember to treat your real estate career as a business -- you're an entrepreneur. The more you learn, care about people, and improve yourself, the stronger your real estate career will be. Best of luck!
