Did you move into a home in 2021? Where did you move to and from? A recent United Van Lines report sheds light on the movements of Americans during the pandemic, something the company has done since 1977. Let’s get moving and check out the results.
In 2021, many of us asked ourselves, “should I stay or should I go?” Moving out of big cities and into less populated areas was preferred by many. So, why did people move, and where are they now?

United Van Lines studied the state-to-state migration patterns and discovered the top 3 states people moved to. Vermont, South Dakota, and South Carolina. These are some of the least densely populated states with fewer than 100 people per square mile. One more indicator is that the pandemic has driven people to want more space and fewer people around them.
Exodus
The top 3 states people moved from in 2021 were New Jersey, Illinois, and New York. The most balanced states were Kentucky and Wyoming, with nearly the same number of people moving in as out of state.

Moving trends in 2021 taught us that family is our priority.
What prompted people to move in 2021? The main reasons people moved over the last year were for a new job or transfer (32.5%) or to be closer to their family (31.8%). One of the motivations behind these changes was the impact of COVID-19. Many people chose to leave highly populated areas and move to smaller cities and remote areas to reduce the risk of infection from the virus. Other top reasons people moved during the pandemic were the flexibility to work remotely, retirement, and lifestyle.
Conclusion
Whether you choose to move or stay in your home, it will likely be influenced by work or family. Despite the devastation COVID has brought to this country, the desire to be closer to the family has been a beautiful outcome. Whether you move in 2022 or not, continue to put your family first.
