It was constructed during the American Revolution and was originally known as Fort Whetstone. Starting in 1798, the fort was expanded and renamed Fort McHenry after James McHenry, George Washington's Secretary of War.
In the War of 1814, Fort McHenry survived an attack by the British Navy. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer who witnessed the attack, wrote an inspiring poem that later became The "Star-Spangled Banner" that we know and love today.
