Las Vegas History
Where It All Began
Las Vegas was named by a Spanish trader named Rafael Rivera. Rafael was making his way to Los Angeles in the early 1700s when he discovered the desert oasis. At that time, wild grasses grew on rich desert soil thanks to an aquifer system that has since been all but depleted. “Las Vegas” translates roughly into “The Meadows”, reflecting the beauty Rafael first laid his eyes on.
Once the railroad was built in the early 1900s, Las Vegas became the link between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Southern California. More and more travelers frequented Las Vegas via the railroad, and organized crime, gambling, drugs, alcohol, prostitution, and gang activity grew. Because of these nefarious activities, Vegas earned the nickname "Sin City".
These days, Las Vegas is typically known as the "Entertainment Capital of the World", the "Gambling Capital of the World", and the "Marriage Captial of the World".
Call Vegas what you'd like but always remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!
