SALT AND MORE SALT Bonneville Salt Flats
147 Million Tons of Salt
Salt Lake City is the home of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Before Lake Bonneville started to recede at the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 1/3 of Utah was under 1000 feet of water in the area now known as the Salt Flats.
The Salt Flats are made up of gypsum, halite, potassium, and magnesium, but mostly common table salt and are as thick as 5 feet in some places. The dry salty area is approximately 12 miles long by 5 miles wide.
You can visit the Salt Flats and experience the white, crusty salt crunching under your feet, witness car racers break land-speed records, watch archery greats in the National Flight Championships, or participate in an annual 100-mile endurance run.
