Generously Give Back to Make a Difference in Your Community

By Janelle D. 2 min read |

What does it feel like to live alone, in poor healthy or elderly, without the means to shovel your sidewalks or drive to a medical appointment? It leaves one feeling helpless, wondering how they can get the help they need. Many of us have known a neighbor like this who could use a helping hand.  Let's explore how you can make a difference in the lives of your community members.

Now is a great time to support your neighbors and community, find ways to give back, and show your thanks. Consider one or more of the following acts of kindness you can perform this season to make a difference in your community:

  • Organize a charity drive to gather nonperishable food for your food bank
  • Make a financial donation to support a need in your community
  • Have lunch delivered to emergency workers and first responders
  • Generously tip the server at your favorite restaurant
  • Send handwritten thank-you notes to small, local businesses you frequent
  • Create handmade holiday cards with your kids and hand them out to neighbors
  • Get your kids involved in neighborhood cleanup activities (pick up litter, shovel sidewalks, clear downed trees/branches)
  • Join or create a local volunteer group

Encourage everyone to share how they can assist (handyperson, shoveling, moving furniture, etc.). Encourage others to report which neighbors need assistance. Add a Facebook link to your website showing others how you give back to your community. Offer to contribute a percentage of your annual business earnings to support those in need. Each month on social media feature someone who went above and beyond in helping the community. Social media provides an excellent opportunity to form a volunteer group and give back to your community.

  • Create a volunteer group on Facebook
  • Invite all of your contacts to follow your group
  • Volunteers share the skills they offer
  • Others report on neighbors in need
  • Add a link to the group on your website
  • Feature someone each month who went above and beyond

The smallest act of generosity can lift spirits, like giving a card to a struggling neighbor. Consider folks who have lost a loved one, gone from a 2-income to a 1-income household, have been moved to an assisted care center, or are dealing with ongoing health problems. A small gesture can go a long way when someone in your community is struggling.

Remember to share your story about how you give back to the community. Not only will it build your reputation as a charitable person, but it will also help you build more relationships with community members. Your acts of kindness may influence others to volunteer too. Help lift someone's spirits this season by volunteering in your community.
